Vanguard for Transparent Leadership and Democracy group, according to Punch has faulted the meeting between the Independent National Electorate Commission (INEC) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) concerning the conduct of the coming general elections.
Igbini Emmanuel, the group’s National President made this known in a statement made available to press men.
He stated that there was no truth in the commission’s recent claim that the ASUU strike could ruin preparation for the elections.
“Our attention has been drawn to recent media reports to the effect that the INEC has raised concern over the ongoing industrial action embarked by the ASUU and the effect it claims it will have on the 2019 general elections since INEC draws majority of its ad hoc returning officers from the university.
“As a result, INEC proposed to meet with the leadership of ASUU to find a way of reaching an understanding for the striking lecturers to assist INEC in the conduct of the coming elections.
“We therefore want to state unequivocally that INEC does not need to rely on these university lecturers and students to conduct free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria. INEC can indeed conduct such free, fair and credible without lecturers and students of institutions.
“The alarm being raised by INEC over the ongoing strike action by ASUU is therefore unnecessary and uncalled for. We wish to remind INEC that it was only recently during Prof. Jega-led regime that INEC decided to invite lecturers from universities in the conduct of general elections with a view only to ensuring credible elections as a result of reports of massive malpractices by its staff and many other ad hoc staff recruited by INEC.
“We have solution to offer INEC on how to conduct free, fair and very credible elections without using staff of tertiary institutions,” the statement reads.
