The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has reacted to the proposed Muhammadu Buhari University to be established by Aisha Buhari, describing it as one of a disaster to befall the country.
According to ASUU, the plan of the Aisha Buhari to establish a private university confirmed why her husband had continued to reduce budgetary allocation to education since he assumed office in 2015.
ASUU Branch Chairman of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Deji Omole and former National Treasurer of the union, Prof. Ademola Aremu shared this opinion while speaking with pressmen in Ibadan.
It is recalled that the wife of President Muhammad Buhari, Aisha Buhari had over the weekend at a Town hall meeting in Yola disclosed her plans to establish a private university to be named after President Muhammadu Buhari in partnership with some foreigners.
According to Omole and Aremu, the leadership of the country under President Buhari should immortalize himself by revitalizing public funded education.
“When I also heard about the proposed private university to be named after Mr. President, I just looked at it as a joke taken too far. If we have a president in a country that has simply refused to fund public education and all we get from the family of the first lady is to establish a private university in collaboration with some foreigners, to me I think it is a disaster for this country and for a sitting president,” Prof. Omole stated.
Speaking further, Prof. Aremu advised Aisha Buhari to influence policies of the president to immortalize himself by revitalizing public funded education in the country.
“I don’t think she is serious. We already have proliferation of universities and they are not taken care of. Since they are policy makers, they will now formulate policies that will grounf public universities aground for their interest to thrive. I thought we have actually left the era. I could remember that Obasanjo established Bells and we condemned it. Atiku also established his own as Former Vice President,” Aremu stated.
