The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), yesterday, received the certificate of operation to run a pension scheme for academic staff of universities which has been named the Nigerian University Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO).

ASUU received the certificate from National Pension Commission, the regulatory board for the country’s pension companies.

The refusal of the National Pension Commission (NPC) to approve the union’s pension scheme for operation was one of the major issues in the dispute between ASUU and the Federal Government.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, President of ASUU, in a short message sent across to members of the union, yesterday, said ASUU received the certificate at about 11.20am.

“Dear Comrade, we collected the final letter of approval of NUPEMCO operational license at about 11:20a.m in PENCOM office. Profound appreciation goes to all who prepared the ground and made this possible,” the President stated.

The ASUU President thanked members of the union for standing solidly behind the leadership while the struggle lasted, pledging the union’s commitment to achieving reform in the Nigerian university system.
