The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has allegedly demanded for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retract a statement claiming that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) could jeopardize the 2019 general elections.
The spokesperson of SSANU, Abdossobur Salaam, told Premium Times on Friday 21, December that the statement by INEC was highly unfortunate and unbecoming of the national electoral agency.
According to the spokesperson, such unguarded statement by INEC had a tendency to erode the confidence of Nigerians in the 2019 elections and is a threat to democracy in itself. He said the ongoing strike by ASUU had nothing to do with the 2019 elections.
“To thus tie the conduct and success of the 2019 elections to the ASUU strike is indeed unfortunate and smacks of mischief on the part of INEC,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also reports that INEC called on ICPC to do something about the cases of vote buying and other related vices
