Falz: Folarin Falana (Falz the Bahd Guy)

Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and actor. The talented rapper, who began his musical career while in high school, was born on the 27th of October, 1990.

Falz the Bahd Guy started his career in secondary school after forming a group called “The School Boys” with his friend before he kicked off professionally in 2009. He became well-known after his song “Marry Me” won him a nomination in the “Best Collaboration of the Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

The talented rapper was also nominated in the “Best Rap Act of the Year” and “Best New Act to Watch” categories.

Falz, who currently owns an independent record label called ‘Bahd Guys Records’, released his debut album “Wazup Guy” in 2014 while his second album “Stories That Touch” was released in 2015.

He released twenty-seven (27) as his third studio album in 2017 and on the 15th of January, 2019, he released his fourth studio album which he titled “Moral Instruction”.

He describes his style of music as “Wahzup music” which is a fusion of comic lyrics with contemporary hip-hop in a faux Yoruba accent.

Falz Early Life and Education

Falz the Bahd Guy was born and raised in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State to renowned lawyers and human right activists, Femi and Funmi Falana.

Falz had his elementary education at St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School, Ikeja, after which he proceeded to Olashore International School for his secondary education. He was called to bar in 2012 after graduating from the Nigerian Law School in Abuja.

Falz had an interesting upbringing as his family would often travel and expose him to different cultures and people. “From Lagos, Abuja, Osun states and the United Kingdom (UK), I had a taste of a lot of different environments,” he says.

 

Falz Music and Acting Career

Folarin Falana aka Falz the Bahd Guy, who is probably the most versatile artist to ever join the Coke Studio Africa, started music as a hobby during his high school days. He later formed a musical group with a friend which was called ‘The School Boys’. In 2009, while in school, Falz released a compilation of some of his recordings as a mixtape titled ‘Shakara’.

On the 2nd of January, 2014, the talented rapper was listed in ‘tooXclusive’s’ Artists to Watch and the 30th of May, 2014, he released his debut studio album titled “Wazup Guy”, which was critically acclaimed by music critics.

On the 27th of October, 2016, Falz collaborated with “Simi” (a Nigerian music artist) to release “Chemistry”, a seven-track EP solely produced by ‘Sess’. He had previously worked with Simi on the singles “JAMB Question” and “Soldier”.

On the 27th of October, 2017, Falz released a surprise album to celebrate his birthday. The release of the album came as a surprise as it was not promoted. The album which contained 17 tracks, featured music acts like “Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, Wande Coal and Maleek Berry” (all Nigerian singers).

The album did very well and it gained several awards and nominations which include “Rap Album of the Year” by Headies Award.

In May 2018, Falz released a music video titled “This is Nigeria” which was inspired by Childish Gambino’s “This is America”. The video featured Nigerian issues including corruption and bribery.

Months later, the song was banned by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) claiming that the song was vulgar. When Falz was asked about the ban, he stated that, “if they ban this song, then I do not understand them because that song is definitely not a vulgar song. He, however, sued NBC for N100 million.

On the 1st of September, 2018, Falz won the “Best Supporting Actor” at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) for his role as Quam in Tope Oshin Ogun’s movie, “New Money” which made him become the first Nigerian musician to have won the AMVCA twice.

As an actor, Falz has featured in blockbuster movies and television series such as, Jenifa’s Diary, Couple of Days, Tinsel, 10 Days in Sun City, New Money, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, and Chief Daddy.

 

Falz Awards and Nominations

Falz the Bahd Guy was nominated in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Award for his chart-topping single “Marry Me”. His single titled “Ello Bae””won him a nomination in the “Best Street Hop Artiste of the Year” category at The Headies 2015.

In 2016, Falz won the “Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series” at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) for his role as Segun in Funke Akindele’s TV series Jenifa’s Diary. In June 2016, Falz was voted the winner of the “Viewer’s Choice Best International Act” category at the 2016 BET Awards.
