Federal Government Reaches Agreement with ASUU

The Federal Government (FG) has been able to reach an agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), over the ongoing nationwide strike declared by public universities lecturers.

According to reports, Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of ASUU, who spoke after the meeting with the Minister of Labor and Employment, Chris Ngige on Monday, January 7, said the National Executive Committee (NEC) of ASUU will review the latest commitment of the FG.

The Minister of Labor and Employment said an agreement has been reached and that “the accountant gel and the Ministry of Finance have confirmed with evidence that N15.4bn has been released to cover funding in public universities.”

Ngige also noted that President Muhammed Buhari has approved N20bn to be used to offset the outstanding arrears of the 2009 to 2012 audit verified earnings in the universities adding that the earned allowances will be released as soon as the process is completed.

Labor and Employment Minister assured that the event would not take long since much effort had been made previously.
