The Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Babatunde Raji Fashola has said the Federal Government will electrify thirty-seven federal universities under the energy education program of the present administration of President Muhammad Buhari.

He revealed this during an inspection visit to the one Magawatt hybrid solar power plant project at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI).

Babatunde Fashola noted that the plant project was one of the policy interventions of the FG targeted at breaking down access to power especially to the rural areas.

He also noted that the intervention project at AE-FUNAI is one of the many projects created by the PMB’srural electrification strategic implementation plans, adding that the project in the 37 federal government owned universities would power the entire university communities.

The Minister stated that, “The AE-FUNAI electrification project under the energizing education initiative is among the 37 federal universities mapped out for electrification and the project is due for completion this year.

“This is 1mw solar plant and 3,500 solar panels are being installed; it comes with eight-kilometer lighting and we are in the last phase of the implementation”.

Reports revealed that the intervention project at the federal universities which involved students was part of policies to ensure that universities had their independent power plants which they could service and maintain.

Reports also revealed that the Minister inspected the power panel station, control room, transformers and other vital components of the plant.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba commended the President for his intervention program in the power sector and for choosing the institution as one of the beneficiaries.
