The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) position on the proposed Muhammadu Buhari University by the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has been condemned by the Scholars Without Boundary (SWB) group for it a joke.
The President’s wife had over the weekend during a town hall meeting in Yola, revealed her plans to establish a private university and which is to be named after her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari.
Aisha, who did not reveal when or where the university would be sited, noted that the establishment of the institution would be in collaboration with partners from Sudan and Qatar.
Reacting to the development, ASUU lamented that the plans to establish the university was a sad reminder of the president’s continued reduction of budgetary allocation to the education sector since 2015. ASUU Chairman of the University of Ibadan (UI) Branch, Prof. Deji Omole, called the proposed university a joke.
However, SWB faulted the position of the lecturers on the proposed private university, adding that such vulgar comment from ASUU should only come from garage hoodlums and not academic body.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the scholars through its president, Ibrahim Taiwo, stated it was worrisome that ASUU seems to have abandoned their major responsibilities of contributing their quota to the peace and development of Nigeria to the obsession with frivolities and diversionary irrational debates.
SWB, however, advised the members of ASUU to channel their energies on productive engagements to assist in the development of Nigeria.
