Ibidapo-Obe Challenges Universities on Patents Production to Increase Value in Research, Development

The Nigerian Universities have been challenged to produce patents which will increase their in research and development, and position them as competitive institutions of learning globally.

Prof. Oye Ibidapo Obe, Ex Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), made the challenge during an interview with journalists.

Obe has the belief that universities in the country should explore innovative ways of solving critical issues in the country, through innovation and technology that can be patented to add value to the economy.

He is of the opinion that universities in Nigeria should be at the forefront of driving more inventions and patents in the country.

Speaking on the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Obe allegedly called for knowledgeable government delegates and representatives to engage ASUU. He said a team who understands the dynamics of tertiary education will know how the issues should be resolved.

Ibidapo-Obe, giving his opinion on public-private partnerships for universities, said that it was critical in the area of skills development, improved funding of the varsities, assisting in infrastructure, internship and providing jobs for graduates.
