Not less than 30 Graduates will be awarded with first class degrees when Kwara State University (KWASU) holds its sixth convocation ceremony this Saturday while a former Republic of South African president, Thabo Mbeki and GTBank founder, Fola Adeola will get honorary degrees.
KWASU VC, Prof. Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, who spoke with journalist at a pre-convocation press briefing of the institution on Tuesday revealed that 1,126 students who have satisfactorily completed their studies will be graduating at the convocation ceremony that would hold on Saturday.
Na’Allah said the institution, though, no longer receives grants from the state government, was determined to make a difference; he gave a breakdown of the graduating students as follows: 522 students for second class upper division, 588 for second class lower division while 60 students are for third class.
The university would confer an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science on a former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, at a special convocation to be held later, according to the VC. Mr Fola Adeola, the founder of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), would also be conferred with honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Entrepreneurship, also a traditional poet, Alhaji Jaigbade Alao, would get an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Literature.
He said “We all remember the great things this man did. “He was the president after Nelson Mandela and it was during his time that the OAU transformed to become AU today. “This university appreciates the contribution that this son of Africa has made in rebranding the continental body,’’ he said. According to him, Adeola, a Nigerian Accountant, entrepreneurial and politician, would also be honoured for his entrepreneurial spirit and setting up a successful banking outfit.
The third person, Alao, was a Dadakuada artist that was turbaned as the king of the genre of music by the late Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Zulukainani Gambari long ago.
