The Lagos state University (LASU), had started the investigation of alleged sexual assault of a student by an Associate Prof. of Economics department. LASU, on Tuesday said it had issued a query to the Associate Prof.
The University’s spokesman, Mr. Adekoya Martins, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the management of LASU had zero tolerance to such evil act.
According to NAN’s report, an associate Prof. of Economics in the Lagos State University was allegedly caught two weeks ago sexually assaulting an unidentified female undergraduate of his department.
Mr. Martins also revealed that the case is already before the disciplinary committee and would thereafter be transferred to the institution’s Senate for consideration.
Mr. Olayinka Amuni who happens to be the University’s Registrar had earlier told NAN in an interview that the sanction for such evil act once proven guilty would be total dismissal.
“Once we are able to establish that a staff engages in an illegal relationship with any student, the person is dismissed from the system because it is the height of academic irresponsibility.
“We are an institution guided by rules and regulations, and once we have an official report or an allegation of someone indulging in sexual harassment, the first thing we do is to issue query to the person. The query is to get information from the person whether indeed that assault really happened or not.
“We would examine whatever response you give with the evidences before us and if the evidences are not genuine, we won’t push further. But if we can find an element of truth in what is before us, the matter is sent to disciplinary committee and the sanction for such activities is dismissal,” he said.
Mr. Amuni also added, saying the institution’s management had continued to encourage the students to always confide in them and report any form of harassment or assault from lecturers or non-academic staff.
