The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Lagos State University (LASU) has appealed to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode as the Visitor of the institution to institute an independent enquiry into the affairs of the university over the last ten years.

This was contained in a statement tagged: “An Open Letter on the Alleged LASU Pension Funds Misappropriation and the Response by the University Administration: A Request For Independent Investigation” addressed to the governor.

The letter with reference number ASUU-LASU/GS/19/389 jointly signed by the union’s Secretary, Tony Dansu and his Assistant, Adeolu Oyekan rejected responses offered by the management of the institution over media reports on the alleged diversion and misappropriation of N198 million staff pension by the top hierarchy of the university.

The duo in the letter stated that the union was aware of the limits of the two personnel mentioned in the alleged N198m scam, adding that limits of the two personnel put N5m and N20m respectively have been eroded.

ASUU-LASU in the letter enquired: “Did the university administration dip its hands into the pension funds of members of staff for the purpose of accreditation; does the pension law permit the university administration to touch such funds; did the Chairman of Council grant approval beyond the limits permitted him by the university regulation; in the case of the N474m withdrawal from the pension funds account, why was the Finance and General Purpose Committee of Council side-tracked in the process contrary to regulation?

In view of other questions raised by the union in the letter, it restated the position of its national leadership of the union in the President’s letter to the Visitor in May 2018 that the university needs a visitation panel.

Also, the union in the letter frowned at the unconcerned attitude of the Special Adviser on Education to the Visitor, Obafela Bank-Olemoh who it accused of failing to respond to its various letters.
