The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) is collaborating with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to enhance the level of research innovation in Nigerian Universities.
The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed made this known in Abuja yesterday.
He stated that Universities in Nigeria should initiate activities that would reposition them as leaders in the education sector, noting that there is need to collaborate with other educational development institutions to improve on the research capacity of the Nigerian universities in line with global best practice.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro said that knowledge has become the currency of transaction and major factor in promoting the economy of a state, and however expressed his displeasure over the low capacity of researchers in the Nigerian universities and urged them to remain innovate in global research.
“As a major enabler for countries, businesses or any organization, research is an important factor in the creation of new things and enhancement of existing ones.
“Through research, solutions to societies’ challenges and problems are not only found, any country or organization not seriously engaged in research will find it difficult to make progress,” Bogoro stated.
He stated that TETFUND would be funding a research capacity enhancement project in collaboration with NUC to address the major challenges related and governance of research in Nigerian university system.
