UI Honors World Citizens As It Celebrates 70th Anniversary

The University of Ibadan (UI) was in celebration mood on Saturday 17th of November 2018 as eminent personalities from within and outside Nigeria meet at the International Conference Centre, ICC to celebrate the Institution’s 70th Foundation Day Anniversary, conferment of doctorate degree and honorary awards.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the personalities present at the event include: President Muhammad Buhari, who was represented by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); Former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole; Governor of the old Western Union, Brigadier-General Oluwole Rotimi; Executive Governor of Oyo State, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi; Registrar of JAMB, Is-haq Oloyede who represented the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu; Chairman of Punch, Chief Ajibola Ogunsola; Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1; Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, Most Reverend Gabriel Abegunrin; Presiding Bishop of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Bishop Francis Wale Oke; Prof. Ayo Banjo; Prof. Ayo Bamgbose; Vice President for Institutional Development and Planning of University of Liberia, Geegbae A. Geegbae and Chief Akinwande Delano, SAN.
Representatives and Vice Chancellors of several universities (both public and private) were also in attendance.

In his address, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who represented President Muhammad Buhari admitted that education deserves proper funding but pointed out that the government alone cannot fund university education.

He said there should be means or innovative ways of financing education including encouraging private sector and alumni involvement in the financing of University education in the country.

The University Chancellor, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakah 111, Sultan of Sokoto had earlier affirmed that the university is fit to be regarded in Nigeria as “the first and the best”.
“As we look into the future, we must first ensure that our university remains relevant to the needs of the society it serves. Universities world over are designed to generate knowledge which societies can leverage to solve their problems,” the Sultan stated.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka disclosed that a total of 371 graduands spread over twelve faculties and five institutes and centers were admitted into the Doctor of Philosophy Degree.

He appealed to the FG to expedite action one release of funds for university ten megawatt solar plant project which was flagged off since 2016.

According to NAN, the main highlight of the ceremony was the cutting of the anniversary cake, the conferment of PhD on 371 candidates and honorary degrees and fellowship on six distinguished Nigerians and eminent citizens of the world.

The honorees were: Parakoyi of Ibadan land, Chief Bode Akindele; Prof. Grace Alele-Williams; Prof. Omoniyi Adewale; Prof. Olufunmilayo Olopade; Prof. Akinlawon Ladipo Mabogunje and Prof. Alake Bolanle Awe.
