The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Muslim Community, according to Daily Independent News, has donated consumables and other household items worth over a million naira to the inmates of both Kirikiri Medium and Minimum Prisons as part of the community’s humanitarian outreach programs.

The items include food items, bathroom sleepers, clothing materials and toiletries among other essential commodities that could enhance and meet the immediate needs of the prisoners.

According to Daily Independent News, Prof. Lai Olurode, Chairman of the UNILAG Muslim Community explained that the gesture was aimed at promoting and extending love, happiness and demonstrate to the prison inmates that people outside the walls of the prisons have not forgotten them.

“We are here to identify with the inmates of the prisons and to assure them that they are not forgotten and that the society still identifies with them. Secondly, our visit is to assure them not to lose hope in any way and that there will be hope for them to experience freedom again in their lifetime.

“Also, we visited the prisons largely to empower them through counseling and through thought-provoking words of mouth. They should not blame others for their present predicament. They should critically examine themselves and actions that led to their incarceration and come up with ways to strategies with them so that this will no longer be their case in the future,” he stated.

Olurode added by saying that the essence of visiting the inmates with legal and medical practitioners was to explore possible ways of providing assistance to inmates of the prison whose cases were not too serious, and others denied access to a lawyer.
