UNILAG Undergraduate Emerges Overall Maths Competition Winner

Jeremiah Adedoyin, a final year undergraduate student of the Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos (UNILAG), has emerged the overall winner of the 2019 National Mathematics Competition organized the National Mathematics Centre (NMC) for university students across the country.

The mathematics competition which started on April 28, 2019, featured eighty contestants from twenty universities and forty contestants won bronze, silver and gold medals.

The Chief Executive/Director of the Centre, Prof. Stephen Onah, at the closing ceremony over the weekend, congratulated Adedoyin for his outstanding performance at the just concluded competition.

“In every contest, there must be a winner and a loser, but know that you are the best in your various institutions,” Onah told the other contestants.

“If there is anything you have benefited from this program, do well to tell others, portray us in good light so that more persons can come to get similar experience,” he added.

He, however, explained that the competition was targeted at identifying the best students in mathematics across the country and to assist them to develop in their future endeavours.

The Coordinator, Mathematics Program of the Centre, Prof. Peter Onumanyi, also stated that the aim of the competition was to groom the future mathematicians from their tender age.

He appreciated all the participants for their commitment to the program and urged them to continue to work very hard.
Adedoyin attributed his victory to determination and hard work. He said, “I thank God for my victory, I didn’t know I will be the winner of this contest. But I just set up my mind that I’m going for gold and nothing less”.
