Universities Can Assist Government in Poverty Reduction, Ethnic Tensions – President Buhari

President Muhammad Buhari on Saturday said universities across the country have major roles to play in reducing insecurity, corruption and ethnic tensions in the country.
President Buhari made this known during the 48th convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria (UNN) Enugu state.

According to Independent News, Mr. President stated that universities must define their roles and carve out a niche by designing programs that will progressively assist the government in poverty reduction, health promotion, Application of new technologies for the advancement of knowledge, promotion and sustenance of human development.

“Universities must define their roles and carve out a niche by designing programs that will progressively assist the government in poverty reduction, health promotion, Application of new technologies for the advancement of knowledge and promoting as well as sustaining human development.
“Universities have a role to play in addressing the challenges of corruption, insecurity and ethnic tension hence the need for improvement in the sector,” PMB said.

“Universities must leverage other relationships such as alumni, friends, the private sector, institutional linkages and funding organizations to attract additional revenue for infrastructure and research development,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, remarked by charging the students to go on to copy the many leadership positions available in the country and even beyond the country.

“It is my hope that your graduation does not signify the end of your relationship with the university but rather be the beginning of a more special relationship where you are upgraded from students to the revered status of alumni and alumnae,” the VC stated.
