A lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan (UI) has allegedly committed suicide. The late lecturer, identified as A.O. Subair, set himself ablaze in his senior quarters located at Phillipson road of the university.
The mathematics lecturer has since been buried at the Akinyele public cemetery according to Muslim rites. He was survived by three children.
According to reports from pressmen, the late lecturer had recently resigned from the university without a justifiable reason but was yet to pack out of the staff quarters before he took his life.
It was also reported that late Subair had separated from his family and had challenges progressing on his career.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter of the university, Prof. Deji Omole, described the ugly incident as pathetic and a major loss to the academic Union.
“We were only informed of the burning flat while efforts to save him proved abortive,” Omole stated.
Omole has urged members of the Union to confide in one another saying, isolation could deepen depression which may culminate in suicidal ideation.
