University of Ibadan Students Debate At SuperBowl National Re-Contruction Competition


Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) over the weekend debated the need for national reconstruction at the 2019 SuperBowl edition of the oratory competition.


The theme of this year’s edition, “The Re-construction of the Nigerian Nation; and UI @ 70: Sustaining the Legacy, Raising the Bar”, was designed to address issues bordering on the country’s polity which has been described as lacking positive  engagement and inspiring public debates.

The goal of the preliminaries and finals elevated the status and practice of social discourse in the country and provided innovative solutions to salient global issues.


According to the organisers, being the biggest oratory competition at the University of Ibadan, SuperBowl finds the best and the brightest of Nigeria’s young thinkers, gives them topicla and socially relevant issues; and then provides them with a stage, upon which to share the results of their brainstorming and research.


The event which took place over the weekend was held to mark the celebration of UI at 70 as winners and participants got cash prizes, tuition scholarships, glass plaques, among other consolation prizes.


The contestants spoke in the first and second rounds of the preliminaries for a maximum of sixty seconds and three minutes, respectively.

SuperBowl is the brainchild of Dr. Bisi Olawuyi, a lecturer in the Department of Communication and Language Arts of the institution.
