The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has released a statement clarifying the fate of 29 students who where graduating from the Institutions Faculty of Law after they were erroneously awarded first class degrees on the University’s verification portal even though only one students was meant to be so awarded.
Though the error which only affects the 2015/2016 academic session of the Law Faculty might not have been taken so serious by the concerned students since they should be aware that website/portal created by the university is to correct errors by students and is not the final list for the convocation.
Earlier, the Dean, Faculty of Law, UNIJOS, Prof. Dakas C. Dakas, explained that the First Class degrees awards to about 20 graduands was in error and that the error, which occurred on the university’s convocation ceremony web portal, saw several graduands of the department’s 2015/2016 academic session bagging First Class degrees. Meanwhile the 2015/2016 set of Law students at the university produced only one First Class graduand, Olusegun Pelumi Adewunmi.
Prof. Dakas told newsmen in Jos on Monday that “the degrees were awarded to the graduands in error. It was an internal problem that would be resolved soon. The students have attested to the fact that their class of degree was awarded in error.”
A statement released by the Institution reported by Premiumtimes says in part:
“For the purpose of clarity, management wishes to state that the Graduands list on the University website is a VERIFICATION PORTAL for students to check and accept or reject the information contained therein.”
It also said corrections are been effected on the portal.
“Management wishes to assure all stakeholders that since in the course of the current exercise some challenges were observed, lessons are being learned while corrections are being immediately effected on the website.”
“Notwithstanding, because this is the university’s maiden deployment of such an interactive portal for its convocation, some initial hiccups and inadvertent errors are to be expected.”
The 29th and 30th Combined Convocation of the University of Jos comes up on June 23, this year.
