A total number of 215 students out of 1,580 students of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, were conferred with First Class degrees at the institution’s convocation ceremony on Friday which took place within the university campus in Ota.
Prof. Aaron Atayero, Vice Chancellor of the university, performed the conferment of Honourary Doctorate degrees and the Presentation of Prizes.
They comprised: 215 bagged First Class honours, 668 Second Class Upper, 415 Second Class Lower, 9 students got Third Class while 239 bagged Post-graduate degrees.
Ajia Motunrayo of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, College of Engineering, emerged the overall best student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0.
According to report, this was the first time the institution would be attaining such feat as the closest being the 2016 convocation where Winner Deji-Folutile of Architecture Department had 4.97 CGPA.
The VC, in his address, noted that education is a powerful weapon which can be used to change the world and to achieve sustainable economic growth, especially, in Africa.
According to him, Covenant University has continued to provide quality education by providing lifelong learning opportunities through granting public access to resources of the institution’s Centre for Learning.
“The institution is commited to supporting and encouraging research and development works aimed at providing innovative soulutions to societal problems and enhancing the quality of life as enunciated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda,” the VC stated.
Also speaking at the convocation ceremony, the Chancellor of the institution, Dr. David Oyedepo, stated that there was the need for Nigeria and other African countries to properly fund education so as to achieve meaningful development.
He also explained that there was the need for Africa to build new nations by placing more priority on qualitative education.
“Until one id transformed through education, he or she cannot transform his environment, socity or nation,” Oyedepo stated.
In his keynote address, Dr. Monisoye Afolabi, a former Director of Business Environment, USAID Trade Hub, Accra in Ghana, made it known that Africa was likely to have more population than China and India with time, adding that the continent should take advantage of its population and invest in education.
He also stressed the need for African countries to spend thirty per cent of their annual budgets on the education sector in order to ensure self reliance.
Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of NUC, who was in attendance at the convocation ceremony, pledged the commission would do everythinf possible to support all the 173 universities across the country.
