As part of its ‘giving back to the alma mater scheme’, the old students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), has refurbished one of the oldest hostels in the institution.
The said project which was estimated at N4 million, included the total overhauling of the electrical system, new fittings and tiles, provision of modern conveniences, plastering and repainting of walls and ceilings thereby making it better and habitable for students.
The President of the Alumni association, Mr. Olaitan Adesomoju explained that the gesture was their own little way of giving back to the institution, which molded them, to become worthy citizens.
While commending members for their support, the president of the association reiterated the need for government to be more involved in the provision of facilities to aid learning nationwide. He assured that the association would continue to contribute its quota to the development of the university to enable if function effectively.
While commissioning the refurbished project, former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who is also an old student of the university, advocated an investment in the intellectual resources of the nation.
“Every Nigerian child must have access to education, while tertiary education must be affordable for all who desire it,” Mimiko stated.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Joseph Fuwape commended the old students for the gesture of giving back, adding that FUTA alumni are pacesetters who always make the institution proud.
