The undergraduate students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti state, on Wednesday protested over incessant power shortage in their host community.
The students, who condemned the poor electricity supply to the community, said the situation was adversely affecting their academic studies.
Armed with placards with various inscriptions like, ‘No Light in FUOYE’, ‘We need electricity in Oye-Ekiti’, ‘Power Supply is Crucial to our Studies’, the protesting students moved to the office of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) before moving to the palace of the Oloye of Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju, to also make a complain of their displeasure.
Speaking to pressmen, the Students Union President of the institution, Oluwaseun Awodola, stated that they were left with no other option than to embark on the protest to demand provision of electricity and other facilities that will make their area conducive for learning.
“The darkness that they have thrown the community to has compelled many of us to go to ATM stands and bank premises to read at night. We need not to be told this is not safe and secured,” he stated.
“We are suffering. We want the FG to come to our aid urgently on this issue of electricity. We cannot continue like this,” he added.
