Best Universities in Nigeria 2020

This article presents the Best/Top Universities in Nigeria. Nigeria currently has 174 Universities registered and approved by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC), though there are so many Universities claiming to be approved and registered in Nigeria especially the private ones, that is the reason the NUC has come out clearly to list all approved Universities in Nigeria, the List shows there are currently 43 Federal Universities in Nigeria, 52 State Universities in Nigeria and 79 Private Universities in Nigeria.

The main issue here is that everybody wants to attend The best University in Nigeria or at least one of the Top 10 Universities Nigeria, hence, the reason for ranking universities base on merit (how they perform and what they offer). Please note that Campusbiz Journal does not rank Universities, rather, we rely on the lists released by the NUC (The Nigeria University Commission); Times Higher Education World University Ranking (they are the world’s number one body for ranking Universities), QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking, Academic Ranking of World Universities, and The Reuters Top 100: The World’s Most Innovative Universities; we also have the List from Webometrics Ranking of World Universities (Webometrics is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. Please note that the NUC has not released their ranking for 2019 and, in fact, Abubakar Rashid, its Executive Secretary said the NUC has not ranked Nigerian Universities in the last 14 years and that all list being advertised in the media are simply fake and are meant to mislead the public ( see the NUC statement here), hence, we have omitted the old list said to be from the NUC since it may not reflect the present performance of the Universities.

The Award for the Best University in Nigeria goes to the prestigious UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN (UI), Ibadan, South-West Nigeria and the much-talked-about COVENANT UNIVERSITY (CU), Ota, Ogun State, South-West Nigeria

Why we are listing 2 Universities in this position:  This list is based on rankings by Webometrics World University Ranking and Times Higher Education World University Ranking. While Webometrics chooses the University of Ibadan as the best University in Nigeria and places Covenant University as the second; Times Higher Education chooses Covenant University as the best University in Nigeria for 2019 and places the University of Ibadan as second and University of Nigeria (NSUKKA) as the third.

This list if from the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (they are the world’s number one body for ranking Universities).

The THE only list three Nigerian Universities in its 2019 ranking and they are:

1. Covenant University
2. University of Ibadan (UI)
3. University of Nigeria (NSUKKA)

The above list from the THE is a big deal because it suggests that Covenant University has successfully displaced the University of Ibadan as the best University in Nigeria despite being a private University.

Top 100 Universities in Nigeria 2019 List (Webometrics Ranking) Released July 2019

This List is from “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities” (Webometrics is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain).

Webometrics calls itself, the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions. Since 2004 and every six months an independent, objective, free, open scientific exercise is performed by the Cybermetrics Lab (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC) for the providing reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact.

The NUC is Nigerian Government’s regulatory agency for the delivery of quality university education in Nigeria, It also ensures the orderly development of a well-coordinated and productive university system that will guarantee quality and relevant education for national development and global competitiveness. This List, though cannot be confirm be Campusbiz Journal to be from the NUC since the body says it has not ranked Nigerian Universities in last 14 years, but this list is being refered to by most newspapers in the country including the social media. The list is said to be for 2017.
