This is the full list of Universities in Nigeria, 43 Federal Universities in Nigeria, 52 State Universities in Nigeria and 79 Private Universities in Nigeria as approved and released by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), the list is the current and valid one for the year 2019 (updated with NUC on 03/10/2019). You can download the PDF here too. According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria presently has 43 Federal Universities, 52 State Universities, and 79 Private Universities. Remember that the NUC is the Agency tasked by the Nigerian Federal Government to regulate and act as a catalyst for positive change and innovation for the delivery of quality university education in Nigeria. The NUC has always warned the general public from time to time to first verify if a university is approved before patronizing them. Some of our friends and loved ones have fallen prey to some elements parading themselves as approved universities, only for people to later find out that they are not approved by the NUC. Please for sake of clarity and posterity, was there anything like University of Ibadan UI in 1948 or University College Ibadan? Otherwise what of the one that was born on Tuesday, December 27, 1962 as University of Ibadan UI, making it the 5th University in Nigeria

    Dear Author,
    The question raised by Okemiri is VERY valid. University of Jos was a campus of University of Ibadan till 1975. Your record has the founding date of UNIJOS as 1975 and not 1972. Why should you record 1948 for UI when it was a campus. It turned UI in December, 1962. Referring Okemiri to UI website is a defeatist approach to research. Provide your readers with reliable information, pls moreso that this is NUC website. Thanks. Goddy, Delta.

      Please note that we can only provide the information put out by the Federal Government of Nigeria because the Institutions in question belong to the FG, the FG has an agency which is saddled with putting out such info, the NUC; the info put out by this agency is authoritative, hence, the reference to it. Please note that we do not, in anyway, dispute your assertions above.

  Hello Ann, we cannot confirm if its true that the NUC has approved Admiralty University of Nigeria because the commission has not listed it as one of the Universities approved, they have also not replied to the request we sent to them, we’ll let you know when they reply.
